Grid Focus first WordPress.com theme release of 2009

Grid Focus on WordPress.comGrid Focus was announced as the first new theme release for WordPress.com in 2009 via Almost Productive. Self-hosted WordPress users can continue to download the theme for modification and use from the official Grid Focus page.

If you have always wanted to try WordPress, but shied away from the thought of setting up your own site, sign-up for your free WordPress.com blog.

This may seem like a small achievement, but I feel warm and fuzzy inside seeing that Grid Focus is available for WordPress.com users.

Expect to see continued Grid Focus development with theme admin options, and possible stylesheet updates for paid WordPress.com users who have access to CSS editing.

Is it possible to make all parent pages like the “browse-button” and have every child page in a hidden div by default ?

Thta would be great to have.

    Hey there,

I really like this theme, but I’d like to only use one sidebar (that will show everywhere).
Can you please help me modify the style.css so that I can remove the middle column and expand my posts over the space that was occupied by it?

Thanks a lot for helping out.

  3. Hakeem says:

that’s a lot of comments, but none of them has answered my question.
I was wondering if it is possible to replace the categories in the navi-bar with the tags, and if so, how would it look like where the tags grow more & more.
    great theme, very excellent work!

    • Derek says:

You can replace the following function used for categories:

      <?php wp_list_cats('sort_column=name&optioncount=0'); ?>

      with:

      <?php if(get_the_tag_list()) { get_the_tag_list('<ul><li>','</li><li>','</li></ul>'); } ?>

The slide down nav area will work fine if you change from categories to tags. It will continue to push the page down further as the # of tags increases.

    • Hakeem says:

Thanks for the reply Derek, but It didn’t work, doesn’t show anything at all now -is there any way to work this out? any more code to change?
oh, there is something else, there seems to be a conflict between lightbox2 plugin and the category menu, when I activate lightbox the cat buttom doesn’t work, it just functions as _top..

  5. C05T1N says:

I figured out how to enlarge the post area. Now I have two other problems :):

    1) The Browse by Topic button expands and shows only some of my categories. How can I change the number of items shown in the sub-menu?
    2) How can I add another button to the menubar? I’d like to link it to a static page.

    Thank you in advance!

  6. cass says:

    hi derek
i think there is a missing div which prevent the commenting box from showing up. i have searched and googled, but can’t find which file to edit/fix…could you post the fix here?

    thanks!
    using gridfocus 1.1 btw

  7. cass says:

    Hi Derek
    thank you for that information

I’ve compared all the code. I added a small change to the navigation.strip.php and the bit that calls in the js/functions.js to the footer.php file. these changes did not fix the issue of missing commenting box when you clikc thru to a post — and i did not find the suspected missing or extra div.
    Darn. so, my problem persists.

is there a page/link where this has been discussed before? i don’t want to bother you if the answer is already out there somewhere.

    thanks again for your help
    regards,
    cass

Is it possible to use a user-defined font?
    If yes, how?

  9. yos says:

    how to make reply button?

    • Derek says:

Grid Focus supports replying to comments. You need to have WordPress 2.7+ installed to make use of the feature though.

    Hey Derek,

I’ve just applied this theme, and love it… and I will be making some really simple tweaks, but i’m having trouble (as a wordpress.com user – no self hosting) removing the Meta block from the far right sidebar column…

Is there anything you can recommend? I can destroy the in FireBug, so I know what to remove, but can’t quite get my head around the CSS to do it :S

    Ta. Disco.

  12. Hugh says:

    Hi,

You know how the ‘Browse’ link triggers the category dropdown? I’d like another link (added to nav.strip) to trigger a different group or selection of categories.

How can I do that? Is it possible to add some code which selects specific categories rather than all categories?

Nice theme. As with all these themes there’s issues (using columns plugins screws the entry text css) but I like it a lot.

    Dear Derek

thank you for that great slim and minimal theme. I found it at http://www.sweet-station.com/)

My problem is I do not have any clue about CSS and I would like to enlarge the main space (as http://www.sweet-station.com/)

Is it easy to do? Thanks for any help!
