November is purple, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

Educate and promote awareness

Last month 5ThirtyOne went pink to support Pink for October raising awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A co-workers partner raised the question challenging me as to why I had turned the site pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness when I had not shown similar support for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, or Black History Month? The answer:

I had never considered using a personal blog website to help educate and promote awareness until Matthew Oliphant’s Pink for October initiative.

After conducting research online, I discovered that November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. Pancreatic Cancer is a malignant tumor in the pancreatic gland; vital because it produces digestive enzymes and important harmones. According to PanCAN, Pancreatic Cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the US yet receive the least amount of Federal research funding.

If you would like to find out additional information about Pancreatic Cancer, the PanCAN website offers great resources and links. If you would like to donate, you can do so on the PanCAN donation page.

As was done for the month of October and Susan G. Komen fund, Adsense revenue for the month of November will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

An experiment with less text, more imagery. The downside is that most articles in the archives have not yet had their proper thumbnails added or linked.

Congrats on the re-design, it looks fresh!

I like the fact that you take time to make people more aware of important health issues and by doing so hopefully more people can contribute to funding or otherwise supporting research in those fields.

  2. Changing the colour and theme of your website does not help cancer research. A post like this does help promote awareness, but the colour is really more irrelevant than the stupid magnetic ribbons you see on people’s cars.

If you care, donate money to foundations doing the research. Put up links to the foundations and encourage others to do so.

  3. Thumbs up on the re-design, I like it! Very nice!

Hey Derek, the new theme looks coool. Is there any possibility that you would release your previous theme to the rest of us.
    thanks
    raavi

  5. @Alex, did you care to read the entire post? I’m assuming you saw the article title and immediately jumped into the comments to share your insight. I conveniently included 4 links to PanCAN and one to their dedicated donation page.

Maybe you missed this line in your haste: "As was done for the month of October and Susan G. Komen fund, Adsense revenue for the month of November will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network."

@Ravi, unfortunately I do not plan to release my previous version. There was far too much hand coding involved for it to be theme friendly.

  6. Very cool, Derek. I received many questions related to, “Why not [choose type of] cancer/sickness/cause du jour.” My reply was, “Good point, why not? Please stop bitching at me* and go do it.”

I am glad that you have chosen to do this. Let me know if you need any help.

And to Alex’s point, people usually need to become aware of an issue, then become informed about the issue, before they are willing to part with their money for it.

*Most of these emails were hyper-critical of me and the event. I know the reason why, but I don’t think the reason is good enough.

  7. looks good derek, will this be the new theme but in a different color or going back to previous once novemebers over., or did you mention that in the post and i glanced past it.

  8. Alex, you’re a drongo (as we say in Australia).

    Love your work, Derek.

  9. November is Prostate Cancer awareness month here where I live. A lot of the guys at my work are growing mustaches (or mo’s as they are called, for the month of ‘Movember‘) as well as rounding up donations for the cause.

Regardless, the intention is good and that’s all that matters. Great job again with the redesign by the way!

  10. Very nicely done!

Its so great that everyone is helping to bring awareness. I’m a community ambassador for Pantene Beautiful Lengths and we are sponsoring the Million Inch Chain. Urging women to consider donating their hair to supply wigs for women undergoing treatment. If you know any women interested in donating or who are looking wigs check out Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Its a wonderful way to support all the women who have lossed their hair do to treament and helps restore their confidence and esteem. It is a really positive way to contribute.

  12. Nope, didn’t miss it. That’s why I didn’t call you a trendwhore or the like :) I applaud REAL contributions to causes that you believe worthy.

Turning your site pink, purple, chartreuse, etc isn’t one. Neither are “awareness” months.

The post you made is useful, good for you. For every person like you that actually does something worthwhile there’s dozens riding on the coattails with ribbons and colour changes, but they don’t actually care, nor are they doing anything to help.

  13. Oh Yeah - i like this! Great Work man! :-)

  14. I really like your themes and i use it for my blog. This purple edition is great look. What’s Next in the December is red with Christmas or HIV/AIDS ? i’m waiting for it. :)
