WordPress Grid Focus

After much personal debate and the incident concerning the WP China Forums, I’ve decided to release the WordPress Grid Focus as a "theme". The decision was made after receiving a considerable number of emails requesting that a variant of the theme be made available for public use. I’m not expecting as much fanfare as the October Special theme which was based off of a pink October Breast Cancer Awareness month theme, but I do hope it may serve as a platform for others to build off of.

I stripped out a few personal bits, removed some ad placement blocks, and allowed the title and tagline to be edited from the WordPress administrative panel. Feel free to visit the project page to find the download as well as a few details concerning the theme. Please do not email me directly for support related questions. Instead, use the Discussion Forum so that others - including myself - can track and contribute to topics.

  2. Thanks Derek!! I think many people will benefit from you publishing this theme to the public.

  3. Thanks Derek. I always did like this design.

  4. Derek, I love it. Currently editing the crap out of it =D, by that I mean making it work with my site. i.e. the columns are too narrow for me.

  5. Great stuff Derek, I suspect this theme will be rather popular with the WP community.

  6. Very nice, Derek. Another quality release. Thanks!

  7. Another amazing theme release! Bravo!

  14. Excellent work, as always. Don’t be discouraged by website pirates. Keep it up!

  15. GARY

    Thanks! I’ll check this out.

  16. Thanks, Derek. I love your site design so much that yours is one of the few blogs I actually visit instead of just following in Google Reader. I’m moving my little blog to Wordpress this summer and am thrilled that I’ll be able to use a version of your theme.

  17. Great job, Derek! btw how are your ASIAN “girl” friends doing? lol

  18. Thanks for the kind comments everyone. And Lemoned, Sylvia says she’s still looking Asian.

Good job, Derek! Your theme always has something new.

As for the WP China Forums issue, what they did is absolutely wrong. However, as a regular reader of your site who happens to be Chinese, I must say your tone in that post made me a little uncomfortable. It sounds as if you were accusing all the Chinese WP users. Of course, sadly copyright in China is not in a good shape yet. But still, it would be nicer if you could more focus on whoever stole your stuff, not every Chinese user. Anyways, I can understand your anger and frustration. Just if you simply told the fact without attacking more people than necessary, you wouldn’t get less support, but definitely less “personal debate” and you would probably feel better:)

Sorry to bring it up again. Anyway, great work. Thanks for sharing:)

  20. It sounds as if you were accusing all the Chinese WP users.

My intent was not to accuse or make it seem as though I were accusing ALL Chinese users, I merely titled the post "WordPress China Users" at the time because that was the title for the entire forum. Again, the tone was not to point fingers at everyone. I was simply looking for a few people to stand up and say that what was going on in the forums was wrong. Forum admins should have squashed such activities from happening in the first place.

  21. fp

I understand your point. But as you have seen, the admins don’t speak English very well, so they probably weren’t aware the theme was stolen from a foreign site, and it’s not an easy job to verify that especially when the poster wasn’t honest in the first place. Of course this shouldn’t be an excuse. But at least after you finally found the way to contact the forum, they made a fairly quick reaction. Anyway, just thought the tone could be better, maybe I was just overreacting, hehe

Actually in many ways you did a very good thing. I just checked the forum, and there seems to be some discussion about how people should be more careful about the copyright issue and respect the authors. Bad people exist. Just keep up the good work, they have no way to catch you up:)

  22. Grid Focus is the style I love.
    Really appreciate your work, Derek!

Great job, Derek! btw how are your ASIAN “girl” friends doing? lol

    ASIAN “girl” friends…….ft : X

  23. Thanks for sharing this to the world, Derek! I have always been impressed with your themes and work.

  24. This is really great. Thanks.

Thank you for this theme. I have to agree with FP’s points about the ‘China’ incident though… it made me quite uncomfortable as well, even as I read it now, one month on from when it arose. Nevertheless, I’m really glad it was resolved amicably after the forum admins stepped in… in a way, although you must have felt quite aggrieved over the whole incident, the community as a whole has benefited from the release of this theme. I suspect it will receive more fanfare than the October Special Theme, because it’s more flexible imho.

  27. Recently I changed the browser’s default background color to a light green to see which websites forgot to set their background color and yours is looking really weird with that. You might wanna set a body background color in your CSS. ;)

  28. hi

  29. To try it is to adopt it. Great theme - thanks for sharing.
I have on my site added a tutorial on how to widgetise it too…in case you want to add it to the distribution. I’ve put it here.

Great theme Derek, thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.

  31. Kudos to you for releasing the template.

    I’ve found my theme!

    Rock on.

  32. A huge thanks to Derek for the awsome theme! I downloaded it recently and orangefied it a little for my web page! Feel free to check it out at http://www.einfach-orange.de

  33. Massive thanks to you Derek. I love this WP theme. It’s made my introduction to CSS and Wordpress so smooth. You’re doing a wonderful job. Thanks!

  34. Was looking for a magazine style theme when I found this and it fits perfectly. There are other free magazine and grid style themes that I considered too but I didn’t find them to be as clean as this one. Check my site for implementation, I have customized it a little but it is still a work in progress — what isn’t?

    Anyway, thanks. :)

    Hey, Derek!
How can I make the “archives javascript” stay always dropped-down?
    Help please. Big thanks!

  36. Hi Derek,
Can you tell us how to make a link for comments show up under each new post on the front page of our blog. This would also display if we had 1, 2,3+ current comments and provide a point of entry to view the post.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Derek is not answering :|

I love the theme! Is there any possibility that you will update the sidebars to be widget-aware, however? I tried my hand at it but I’m not so good with the PHP yet.

  39. Hello, Derek. This GridV2 theme is available for public download?

  40. Hello,

Great theme. I’m using it for a couple of months now, and it works great. I did some small modifications.

    Thanks!

  41. Hi there, I have recently downloaded your theme and am currently trying to edit it to best suit my website, just wondering how does one add those additional divs like you have underneath your post eg “view tutorials” and then how it has the two seperate columns within itself.
