UPDATE: Joost loaded the invites pool. Nearly unlimited invites available as of this update. Drop your request in the comments and I’ll make sure to send the invites out as soon as possible.

Joost logoThe closed beta (as of this posting) service Joost - from the creators of Skype - looks to be the hottest ticket at the moment as far as beta invites are concerned. If you haven’t heard of or read anything about Joost [and the promises, hopes, and dreams early adopters forsee], check out the chatter on Technorati. I manged to acquire an invite a number of weeks back and am entertained by the idea of legally running the application on my Apple TV without any necessary hacks or general geekery requirements. Come on Apple! Update our consoles with an online directory of "approved" applications we can run from our couches. Isn’t the Apple TV already phoning home?

I enjoy the idea of one day dropping / replacing cable television altogether in favor of online content. Come to think of it, I haven’t flipped through channels on TV for quite some time. Are you still watching cable television?

If you’re looking for a Joost invite, I currently have 5 available. The first 5 readers [have received their invites] to comment with their favorite article & why (I’m curious to hear about interests readers) from the archives will receive an invite in their inbox (assuming your address in the comment form is legit). I’ll update the availability of invites as time passes as my account is replenished.

  1. Do you mean our favorite article from your site, or do you mean something completely different. Sorry if I’m missing the point somewhere, I’m feeling especially dull today.

Anyway my fav article on 531 has to be the one on Wide Tall Navigation or the one outlining all the ways to screen cap in OS X. Those are my favorites because I actually learned a skill I use all the time in both.

  2. I’d love an invite if you wouldn’t mind. More than anything, I’d like to see what all the hype is about.

I think my favorite post would have to be your post titled “Web development - Recommended OS X tools”, simply because as I recall that post was really informitive. It was a great write up about something I wanted to know.

My runner up would have to be your post on IconBuffet. That’s how I originally found your site via 9rules. ;)

  3. Ben

Maybe not so much a favorite, but I like your design tips and mini tutorial-esqu posts for websites. For example, Wordpress author comment styling, and the Table of Contents navigation to name some of the recents I enjoyed.

Overall, everything is really nice here.

  4. Zach

Hey - I’d love an invite too… I found your blog while researching Basecamp, so that is my favorite article…the comparison one…

    Thanks!
    Zach

  5. Rob

An invite would be appreciated. I concur with the Apple TV article. it’s sexy, yes, …. and I almost succumbed to it, as you did…. But I’m not sure if I need one ;)

  6. My favorite was http://5thirtyone.com/archives/751

I had been ogling the Edge before, but the lack of Mac support turned me off. Now, thanks to you, it’s sitting right here on my desk!

  7. Eric

My fav article was the heatmap story http://5thirtyone.com/archives/790.

I love the idea of heatmaps, it give a far more detailed perspective of what users are actually doing when they visit your site.

  8. Aw crap, too late. I’d love to get an invite once you get some more.

  9. Whit P.

Favorite post is certainly the Shamed >> Misinformation…

The power of rumor never ceases to amaze…. There is so little trust on the Internet…the skill to read through the crap doesn’t seem to mature with age…what a pity. (At least 20% pitiful.)

  10. One of my favorites (and why you’re on my Bloglines subs), this post
    to setup styling author comments:

    http://5thirtyone.com/archives/774

I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t implemented it yet…but I do plan on
doing it soon! Heh. But I find posts like that really helpful. It’s
something most of us bloggers want to do but never take the time to.
That type of tutorial helps. :)

  11. Any of the five who received invites want to share the love? :)

  12. Adam C., Andre, Ben, Zach, and Rob should all receive their invites shortly. I will update the post and availability of invites as time progresses. Anyone who does receive an invite who would not mind sharing a spare with other readers would be much appreciated. Get in touch if you´re open for sharing.

  13. Dang, I missed my chance, still waiting for Joost to invite me after signup. :(

  14. oooh, i’d love an invite, if any of you want to share too. :)

  15. I’ve been using joost for a few weeks now. I’m not going to lie, I’m not very impressed. The awesome thing about TV is the fact that it’s a real-time broadcast, and not a streaming broadcast. I can’t see something like joost replacing TV because of this!

Either way, sorry I have no invites left. I’ll check back here when I have some more!

  16. I’m with Jack on this one, I’ve had a pass from the start of the Venice Project beta, now Joost and all the way I’ve been thinking, “nice idea, nice UI, but this just aint gonna work”. In the UK, we are a bit behind with snappy broadband speeds, so a case of lag, but mostly the problem is content. The content on Joost is so poor. Not supprising as something like Lost or 24 are extreamly expensive to make and I can’t see adverts on Joost paying for much.

  17. I’ve been with this since it was the Venice Project. It’s coming on a fair way and is much improved. Currently, however, it’s not wowing me in the manner I had hoped it would do.

The content is still thin on the ground, though it is improving. Once major TV channels sign up to it things should improve immensely - even if it involves a small monthly subscription/ pay-per-view service.

I too am dying for an invite so I can test on my apple TV….I love the device, mostly use it to stream music I never get a chance to listen too (always working at PC) and watch an elegant slideshows of family photos I have forgotten exist…

Anywho..I join the legions lookng for jump on joost if anyone can spare cjinnc@gmail.com

  19. Hehe, shame I was too busy yesterday to sit down at the computer and read this post!

Incidentally I was on the Joost site about a week ago, and it’s looking pretty good from what I can see. It’s just a shame knowing that the rigid and expensive licensing issues of traditional media are going to make it tough work getting good content onto Joost.

I’m still going to tell you about my favourite article though Derek. That honour goes to Breathe new life into OS X Front Row. The reason being I am intending to make ‘the switch’ to Mac when Leopard comes out and was trying to decide on a strategy for storing my media that would make transition to a Mac easy. After reading that article I decided to store all my media on an external drive (Western Digital MyBook Premium) so that I can use it with my PC’s now, and with the Mac when I eventually switch.

I knew about aliases in *nix systems from using Ubuntu, but the knowledge that I can use that method for getting my media into Front Row was a big help, so thanks!

  20. I’ve had my eye on Joost from afar, and it seems that the consensus for it has mixed reviews for it. I’ve read the half that enjoys it and the other half, like Jack (stylesheet).

Regardless, they just need to rid of that damned closed beta, so I can get my nubby fingers on it and try it out for myself.

  21. I’m surprised to hear the defense that Joost will not compare to actual television because Joost is streaming as opposed to being "live". Aren’t more people using TiVo to time-shift content anyway?

  22. =(
I didn’t get my invite… anyway you can try re-sending it, Derek?

adam at ruleofone dot com is the one I usually use here or you could try
    carmodyarc at gmail dot com

If you can’t I understand. It was nice to win one of these for once though. Go ME!

  23. Hey Adam, I checked the invite status and all it shows is "invited". I can’t find a link to re-send. Sorry. Did you check your spam filter?

  24. Hmmm… I did check the spam filter…. This makes me distrust Google Apps even more.
    Thanks anyway.
