Derek Punsalan…is experiencing progress

Progress is finally being made on is.derekpunsalan.com. Let’s throw some bets down for expected update intervals - work permitting.

There is a worthwhile story behind my decision to setup a second domain. We’ll save that discussion for a lengthier post.

  1. errrrr, the site isn’t loading properly, I click the link and it loads but only whiteness appears. It then doesn’t seem to do anything.

  2. Strange. The entire directory was cleared out for a second. I’m not going to point fingers at *cough* a grid hiccup.

  3. Lol, is working now and was quickly after, good work! Have to say I reaaally like the new site. Looks very smart and stylish, a definate winner in terms of a simple presentation of your portfolio!

  4. “There is a worthwhile story behind my decision to setup a second domain.”

Maybe because all the cool kids are doing it? ;)

Oh, and I just wanted to say that the design of that little site is hot. I especially like the way you did the thumbnails.

  5. very nice, I bow, or something, to a master. much kudos and stuff too

  6. Looks awesome. I wish I could design half as good as your sites.

  7. Finally back with some images, Derek. Nice one!

  8. Thanks for the kind comments guys. There is still a ton of work I have planned for the site. I imagine I’ll be tied up with work which will prevent me from hitting on the anticipated goals. They’re definitely on the agenda though.

  9. Derek it looks amazing! It was cool to see some glimpses of some of your other work as well, I really like some of the common themes between them.

  10. Mykal

Nice… Im looking forward to see what you’ve got in store for the future!

  11. I didn’t notice until I saw the Wordpress Database error while (mt) was down, but if this site on top of wordpress?

I also love the built in agg, I’d like to integrate something like that to the homepage of zamwi.com.

  12. Yes, the backend is WordPress. I was planning on creating a mini blog which was the reason I installed that straight away.

  13. I am seriously this close to starting a social network for people with hatred towards Media Temple. For all the hooplah about that them I have had NOTHING but problem after problem and problem…..

  14. Chris

Hey Derek great page man! This sort of reminds me of a mini popurls page.

Any way you can give us a little info on how you did it? I have been trying to find a decent way of aggregating feeds onto a page in wordpress that looks this clean forever!

Pretty please, with sugar on top!?

  15. Chris

    No love??

  16. No love? Ha. Try little time ;) For a no frills / stress-free method of implementing multiple feeds I would recommend checking out BDP-RSS Aggregator. Concerning the rest of the site, well that’s your standard WordPress loop finessed and massaged to look like it’s not WordPress.

  17. Chris

Your tha man~ Thanks for the link, much appreciated! Was the feed display all controlled via css?

  18. Of course. Are you planning on making something look similar?

  19. Chris

Well sorta kinda, bascially what I mentioned above my “no love” comment. I was looking for a clean way to aggregate more than just a few feeds on a page similar to popurls but within wordpress. You have the golden nugget, I just was curious as to how you set it up.

I don’t want to copy, I guess it more of a functionality thing.

  20. I’d be interested in seeing it. My initial idea was to have - rather than RSS driven links - link titles to various categories throughout the site. Unfortunately, the ultimate decision for the site proved to be far simpler than what I had intended. Possibly something that I will work into 5thirtyone.

  21. Chris

No doubt man. I was looking for that missing piece i.e. a decent aggregator to work in wordpress without 80 million hacks. But now that you shot me the link I can continue the trek.

I hate to ask you more about it so I don’t sound like a biter but did you use the static home page way of implenting it or something similiar?

  22. The page is still dynamic - meaning that if I put up a new post it would alter the way the page looked.

  23. Chris

Ahhh thats right you said that. (dur…) Man I want to pick your brain on the how to bro but I don’t want you to have to go as far as writting me a tutorial.
