Widgetized WordPress theme - October Special - 5thirtyone.com

October Special, previously recognized as the Pink October WordPress theme released early last month, is a widgetized release which allows users to manipulate sidebar content - both top and bottom - using convenient drag ‘n drop “widgets” within the Presentations Dashboard preferences pane.

About & Legal

Although there are no monetary requirements needed in order to utilize the October Special, I reserve the right to request that any credits concerning the theme origin be retained and that any distributions of the theme be limited to 5thirtyone.com (unless otherwise agreed upon - contact me). The only motivation for this request is due to my attempt to control officially updated revisions.

Download

October Special was created as a modified version of the original Pink October theme - designed to be a lean, mean, database light WordPress theme with a considerable number of advertising placement opportunities.

  • 3/20/2007: Still having issues with the recent comments / posts widgets included with the official Widgets plugin? Danny has recommendations for everyone.
  • 3/3/2007: Due to a WordPress widget issue, individuals electing to make use of the recent comments widget will discover that comments under individual posts will render incorrectly. Fortunately, Ben found a workaround with the code included in his comment.
  • 11/14/06: October Special update with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by Niel Patel of Pronet Advertising. Review the included README for additional details.
  • 11/13/06: Reset the archived posts loop. - Thanks Sean
  • 11/5/06: Initial widgetized modification of the Pink October release.
  • Changes from Pink October: There have been a number of minor HTML/CSS tweaks since the October 8th release. I encourage current Pink October users to download the modified release.
  • Now distributed with multiple colors schemes - blue, pink, green, brown, red, and orange - controlled via the Theme Presentations tab thanks to the WordPress Theme Toolkit.

Questions

  • It’s November, why is this theme called October Special? - The release is a modified version of the Pink October theme released for the Pink for October web initiative.
  • How do I enable widgets on my WordPress install? - In order to use the widget enhancements, you’ll need to install the Automattic Widgets plugin found here.
  • I don’t want to use widgets, can I still use this theme? - Yes. The theme can be used by those who opt to run plain vanilla without widgets. The default content displayed in the sidebars will be visible - elements for an introductory paragraph, RSS feeds, and search.

Important Notes

  • At this time, I’ve elected to enforce a static search element towards the bottom of the theme in the archived data / comments area.
  • Niel Patel of Pronet Advertising is currently mulling over the code in order to improve this lightweight theme into maximize SEO (Search Engine Optimization). - Completed
  • The Flickr widget is unstyled. I was not able to get the widget to load properly during tests. Additionally, the standard “links” widget is also unstyled.
  • If a widget offers the option to add a title, I encourage you to do so less you feel the urge to have cramped horizontal lines for listed elements.

  1. Great release, if only it would’ve been released a bit sooner though, I just completed editing my Pink October theme. =D

    Well I recommend looking through the new stylesheet. I fixed some padding / margin errors for meta data on the archived posts on the front as well as meta data for the comments that are floated to the left.

  3. Good work Derek, but man, I had just finished modding Pink for October! I noticed that a lot of the PHP files are fairly similar (eg. main_right.php is exactly the same if you aren’t going to use the widgets) so I just updated the CSS and whatnot and it runs fine with the old version.
    Thanks!

    For the most part the changes were in the stylesheet. If you want the new color options in the admin area, you’ll need to update the header.php and add functions.php, the webtoolki, and the switch.css. Niel of Pronet Advertising is finishing up his SEO optimization so you may want to check back with the minor changes that I’ll post.

    I downloaded this copy, great theme! thanks! I noticed theres problem showing up my comments, which I have able to show on my previous october pink theme. Weird.

    And the issue with your comments is..? What? They don’t show up completely?

    woah, yet another nice theme!

    hmm, i think it’ll be really cool if this had the scriptaculous drawers like in 5thirtyoneV2.

  8. hmm, i think it’ll be really cool if this had the scriptaculous drawers like in 5thirtyoneV2.

    Simple enough for someone to rip out and implement on their own time.

  9. Hello derek.
    nice work there.

    i wonder if the bottom posts is not displaying the first post that shows on top. i am testing it with this:

    ID == $first_post ) continue; update_post_caches($posts);

    and it works!

    well, i just want to say you did a great job. maybe i’ll use this theme after i’m get bored with my current theme. sorry for my bad English.

  10. Douglas

    Another great theme, anohter reason to come back to your site over and over again. Keep up the good work and thanks!

  11. Hey Derek,
    Great job on your widgitized theme.

    The question is, is it possible to add “next” and “previous” on the main page. I know you already have it on the archive, but when I did add the links on the main page.. it just seems doesn’t like it much.

    Let me know if I was missing something…otherwise I will go ahead and modify it.

    Thanks

  12. Nice work. :) Well, I have a little problem. How to use Gravatar with comments.php without destroying the layout?

    Did you read the Codex for details on getting the next and previous links added? You’ll need to do so somewhere in the loop.

    Well, I have a little problem. How to use Gravatar with comments.php without destroying the layout?

    How you decided to implement Gravatars is up to you. I would recommend adding the necessary syntax somewhere in the comment_credentials DIV.

  14. derek. how did you get the nice hatch on your comments? is it supposed to be that way upon download or did you tweak your css a bit?

  15. Yes. Look through the comments.php file and you’ll see that any author comments - defined by the author email - are assigned a special .author class. That allows you to style author comments differently:

    .commentlist li.author {}
    li.author .authorhighlight {}

  16. Greetings - found your site ages ago and now I’m actually using your theme on a site I manage.
    Two questions (probably with simple answers but please indulge me):

    1. How does one create the Colophon page? I created on from Write Page and called it Colophon but it does not get linked to when I select the “Colophon” link at the top of the home page.
    2. How does one change the quote that appears in the header?

    The site: http://pennpi.org/

    Thanks.

    2. How does one change the quote that appears in the header?

    After creating your Colophon page, you’ll need to manually link the page. Edit main_right.php. In order to change the header description, open up header.php.

    One more question. I noticed that text wrap around an image works only sometimes. Usually when i align a smaller image to the left of the text in a post i indicate vspace=”5″ and hspace=”10″ the text still winds up right next to the image - is there a way around this?

    thx.

    Generally bad practice to do what you’re doing to align images.

    Use the following syntax to float an image. To float the image to the right you would replace the floatleft with floatright. The stylesheet already has the styling rules included.

    <img class="floatleft" src="/path/to/image.jpg" alt="This is a picture of a boat" />Add your plain text or content around the image so that lines wrap.

  20. I just tested this on WordpressMU without good results. Any chance that you will try to accomodate the Multi-user version?

  21. I just tested this on WordpressMU without good results. Any chance that you will try to accomodate the Multi-user version?

    I can’t say that I’ve ever played around with WordPressMU. I’ll definitely add it to the agenda. I wasn’t aware of the fact that there was much difference between the standard WordPress install as far as theming was concerned. Shoot me an email SUBJECT line: October Special - WordPressMU support - contact.

  22. Thanks for the work,

  23. alk

    I installed this theme on my wordpress but it seems to have issues with comments.
    here’s a scenario.
    i have 3 posts 1-3 , when a comment is posted under post 2 it shows as though it’s been posted under post 1 but when i click on individual posts the comment shows up under all of them regardless of whether or not it was posted for that particular post.
    this issues seems to be only with this theme
    any suggestions? thanks for a great theme by the way

  24. Hello,

    I have stumbled upon a bug

    When I have widgets enabled and when I add the Recent Posts Widget in Sidebar 1 then all the comments disappear. If I then comment under ANY post then only that comment appears under all posts. If I remove the Recent Posts widget then everything goes back to normal.

    Thanks

  25. Hey Derek,

    Just installed your great theme on by WP installation after upgrading to 2.0.5, and I get the error …

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare getcolorscheme() (previously declared in d:\customers\watchingwow.com\wwwroot\wp-content\themes\octoberspecial\functions.php:78) in d:\customers\watchingwow.com\wwwroot\wp-content\themes\octoberspecial\functions.php on line 85

    … on about every page in the admin and also on the main page of the blog.

    Any tips would be appreciated :)

    Thanks,

    Acacia

    Seeing as though I have yet to encounter this bug, and am not able to see an example, I can not comment on your issue. The theme is being used on this site and I can’t match any bugs.

    When I have widgets enabled and when I add the Recent Posts Widget in Sidebar 1 then all the comments disappear. If I then comment under ANY post then only that comment appears under all posts. If I remove the Recent Posts widget then everything goes back to normal.

    Unable to reproduce this bug. This may be a widgets / plugin issue.

    Acacia: It looks like the theme is running just fine on your site. The theme was developed on 2.0.5. Are you still seeing issues?

  27. alk

    looks like that issue i mentioned earlier has something to do with the widgets.. i took off the first (top) widget and comments work fine. once again thanks for a great template and happy thanksgiving

  28. Derek, beautiful theme which I’m using on two sites. On jcu92.org, which is a community site, I’m trying to include the author tag in the left info column. I have placed the exact same tag in three places: Main Index Template, bottom_posts.php and Single Post, but the tag only seems to work within the Single Post. Bug, or am I missing something important?

  29. Anton what author tag are you using for each?

  30. Hey again,

    yes, the theme runs very well now, but I had to remove the call for letting me change the color theme, both in the functions file, and in the header. I plan to modify the theme abit further so that dosent really bother me as I could get rid of the error messages pretty easily.

    Thanks for a great theme :)

  31. Is there any required plugin for this theme? and how what plugin do you use for the “current popular” section?

  32. Is there any required plugin for this theme? and how what plugin do you use for the “current popular” section?

    There are no required plugins. At current, the popular posts are created manually using data that I collect from my Mint installation. I then take the top links and create a link list using WordPress.

  33. Derek, I tried the_author (http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/the_author) and the_author_posts_link. The author posts link is working on the Single Post pages but not on the main index page.

  34. Something like the following should work on the index page:

    <?php the_author_firstname(); ?>

  35. Derek,

    Thanks for this fantastic theme. It’s well coded, easy to use and even better to look at. I do have a question regarding comments…or the lack of them.

    If you take a look at this post on my blog, there should be 3 comments, however two of them from October simply are not appearing. I took a look under the hood and simply don’t see why this should be happening. Any thoughts on why comments from the past don’t want to appear while the test comment I left this morning does?

    Thanks,
    Dave

  36. Are any comments being held in moderation? What plugins are you running? Anything else that should be taken into consideration?

  37. I tried the tag you suggested, and similar tags. Still nothing showing on the front page. Weird.

  38. Just wanted to say how great this theme looks. I’ve modified it slightly (emphasis on slightly) and used it on my blog.

    Blog url: http://marcusthompson.org/

    Thanks for this!

  39. I’ve integrated FAlbum on http://www.admartinator.de/photos/ . If someone likes to have the album.php drop me an email.

  40. same error as Acacia

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare getcolorscheme() (previously declared in functions.php.

    Quick fix for me was to replace the tag body tag using in header.php.

  41. What WordPress versions are issuing this error. I just download and installed the theme on 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 without resulting in any errors. Next time errors are shown make sure to include your version and current plugins. If the error persists, try disabling plugins and installing then re-enabling.

  42. First of all, let me just join in and add that this is a gorgeous theme. It’s simple, easy on the eyes and still manages to be very unique. I’ve got 85 themes installed on my Wordpress site and this is the first one I really like. The header colour variations mean my blog and vlog can have a nice, subtle difference in appearance while still using the same theme.

    However, like Morad I am missing the “Next” and “Previous” links. I’ve added them in the individual entry pages, but I would really like to implement them on the main page, at the bottom of the excerpted entries. This being outside of The Loop, and me being what amounts to PHPtarded, I’m left totally confused as to how to implement it.

  43. I’ve been using this for a little while now and I really like it. I wanted to say thank you for creating it!

  44. Where do you paste the adsense code for the left hand side bar? Since in the widget bar, it only shows sidebar1 which is top right side bar and sidebar2 which is bottom right sidebar.

  45. Did you check the source code that is being used right now? I simply added the Adsense code below the edit link in the templates.

  46. Did you check the source code that is being used right now? I simply added the Adsense code below the edit link in the templates.

    Yes, i looked through your source code and i was able to get the ads on right hands side, under tags, comments.
    I am trying to figure out couple of things.
    How come you are getting only 1 post in the first half of the page?
    Secondly, the second half of your site is very well laid out. Pardon me, but can you give me some ideas how you did this?
    Are you using widgets at all?

    DUDE, This is an awesome theme. I just love it and want to use it. I am just playing with it and will customise at http://nakr.ner before porting across

    Cheers
    Alpesh

  47. Ah… just simply added the Adsense code below the edit link in the templates. I didn’t know that, it will show up below tags.
    BTW, awsome theme

    Thanks Derek

  48. Hi Derek,
    I downloaded the theme again and am not sure, what do you mean by template file :-) Is the index.php
    I did not see, edit here.
    I would like to place ads, exactly the way you have here on this page.
    Can anyone guide me?
    Thanks Heaps

    Hey Derek, does this theme work with gravatars? I followed the instructions while I was installing the gravatars plugin but when I go to my comments all I see is the snippet of code I was suppose to use in the comments.php page:

    if (function_exists('gravatar')) {

    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, great theme by the way!

  50. The theme does not support Gravatars as-is. You’ll need to edit the comments.php template accordingly.

  51. Suzanne

    Hi, I wanted to try to install this theme and I am a total newbie. I clicked on the download box above, I saved the zip file on my desktop, I double clicked the zip file, I made a new folder named october_theme, highlighted the 4 things (2 folders and 2 docs?) and tried to drag them into my new folder. I box pops up and says “The system cannot find the file specified.”

    Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?

    I appreciate any help I can get … Thanks! Suzanne

  52. Hey Derek,
    I rly love your theme but I’ve found a bug. If you reduce your browser’s size so that there’s a horizontal scrollbar, the content section has got a space on the right (hidden before scrolling horizontal) in the same color as the comments-part. How to manage that it is white, too? Your blog doesn’t have the bug.
    And btw: What about the irregular borders between some comments?
    Regards, Simon

  53. A Very Happy New Year to You!
    I had been looking for a cool theme for about three days but could not find anything to suit my needs. Then I stumbled upon October Special theme. I think its really cool.

    My coding skills are negligible so I simply cannot figure out how to do the following:

    1. Previously I had three more pages but since changing the theme, they do not display in the navigation menu. How do I display them?

    2. Do I need to create a page for Colophon to make it work?

    Once again, your theme rocks dude.

  54. Manu, the reason why are you pages do not show up automatically in the nav bar is because I did not include the functionality of listing your current pages. Simply log into your Dashboard and go to Manage > Pages and find the direct links to each page that you wish to add to the navigation. Then, edit your header.php template to include the links. “Colophon” is your standard WordPress page which contains your “about” info. Simply add the direct URL to the existing Colophon HTML markup.

  55. Can you give the the line in the source code where that can be found?

  56. Hi there,

    Amazing theme :-) totally love it. Just moving from Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org so want to use it on my new hosted site. Extracted the .zip to the themes folder, but when I go to Presentation it says ” Stylesheet is missing.” Have redownloaded and re-extracted but still get the same message. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Guy

  57. Don’t you have any idea how to solve the problem described above?

  58. Only upload the folder titled octoberspecial. Do not upload the entire unzipped directory from the download.

  59. Argh, I meant the problem described by me! ;) http://5thirtyone.com/archives/703#comment-37000

  60. Screenshots of what you’re describing? Post the link(s) to images in the comments and I’ll try and understand what you’re referring to.

  61. That fixed it, thanks!

  62. Hey derek!

    Phenominal job on yet another WP theme! I had a question that is similar to one that was never solved earlier in the comments.

    Problem:
    On my blog (found by clicking on my name) I only have about 5 comments. But those same 5 comments are found under every post. No matter if they apply or not. And I cannot figure out why it is doing that.

    I use wordpress 2.0.4

    If you have any ideas please let me know.

  63. JJ, one of a few reports that the comments are being displayed under the wrong posts. I have yet to see that on any installs that I’ve experimented with. Aside from the WordPress version that you’re using, what other plugins or modifications are being used?

  64. Thanks for the quick response. To answer your question.

    Wordpress Plugins that are installed:
    Akismet
    Google Analyticator
    Text Link Ads V2
    Thee widgets (Sidebar, Google, Delicious)

    Modifications that I made besides the obvious visual ones:
    I changes the # of posts on the front page
    Nothing else really

    Could it be the whole widgets in the comments area? because that is where the problem lies. Thanks again for your help!

  65. Derek!!! I think I found the source of the problem.

    When i deactivate the “Sidebar Widgets Plugin” the comments do what they are supposed to. So i think it is somewhere in the commens code with the widgets. I’ll keep looking…

  66. JJ, If it is confirmed to be the sidebar widget for comments causing some type of problem, I’ll update the post and hopefully try to find a fix.

  67. If you need to you can contact me via my e-mail (that I had to enter to post) and i can turn the widgets on and off so that you can see when the errors appear.
    Thanks again Derek! You’re the man!

  68. three problems in IE:

    http://www.seniorcitizens.com

    1. the header title is being mispaced underneath it. it adds two or three lines.

    2. when I add adsense to the single post page so it appears in the left hand column, it drops the entry below the bottom of the adsense column.

    3. how do you add an adsense column to the left side on index page. which file needs to be edit, and where does the code go? and how do you add adsense to the colophon area on index page?

    is there a new class entry that has to be made to the stylesheet?

    these problems don’t occur in firefox, but do occur in IE. thanks!

  69. oops. that was seniorcitizen.com. singular name.

  70. I don’t see any issue in IE when previewed via Parallels. I’m assuming you’ve fixed the problems. Concerning the placement of Adsense ads in the left column on single posts forcing content down, the reason is because you may have not set the width or cleared the floats properly in the CSS. No issues with the theme itself.

    Hey JJ, I was unable to reproduce the commenting error with another user who was reporting the same issue with a modified theme he was running.

  71. Kevin

    Hi Derek.

    This is a wonderful theme ( as are your other creative efforts ). Thankyou for sharing it.

    I have installed it on my site. I use markdown instead of html in formatting my prior posts. I notice that links show up correctly in the top ( content_left ) section but do not have the markdown formatting applied in the bottom (bottom_left) section.

    I don’t know much about wordpress but I think this is because you’ve used this “function the_content_rss” which, i guess, doesn’t call the formatting bits. Is there another function I can replace this one with that will truncate the post length?

  72. Matt

    Hi Derek,

    Gorgeous theme, and very functional.

    I just wanted to ask whether there is any way to change the number of posts appearing in the “white” section on the index page. My blog often combines short and long posts, and the theme does not work so well when the latest post is really short.

    Do you have any advice on how this can be done? If so, can you also change which posts are displayed further down, so there is no double-up?

    I suspect doing all these might be beyond my coding skills but I thought I would ask in case there is a relatively easy solution.

    Thanks!

  73. Would you know of any reason why pictures would not get displayed in a post on the front page? When looking at the post directly, the photo is there.

    Also, in one of my posts near the bottom of the front page, the tag that calls my photo gallery shows up. Usually these tags don’t show up.

    Thanks for your help!

  74. Derek, I LOVE this theme, and I am very thankful that I can use it.

    I have a problem though. I notice that in longer posts there is a strange breach in some of the paragraphs. It happens on various posts and II can’t find anything wrong in my HTML source code.

    I am using Firefox. Check this post for an example: http://www.boemlauw.nl/2007/02/05/inzicht-in-de-overlap-tussen-jouw-talent-passie-en-meerwaarde/

    In some of the paragraphs there seems to be a that I didn’t put in there.

    Do you have a clue? Thanks!

  75. Jasper, there is a autop feature which inserts markup based on line breaks. It’s not a fault of the theme… Rather a fault of WordPress. Google for the hack to fix this or edit posts in the HTML editor rather than the WYSIWYG rich editor.

    I believe you can fix it by editing the following: \wp-includes\default-filters.php

    //add_filter(’the_content’, ‘wpautop’);
    //add_filter(’the_excerpt’, ‘wpautop’);

    Again… Google for the answer before committing any changes.

  76. Great theme! Love it!

    One question - I have a post with 407 comments which seems to get stuck on loading for Firefox/Mac. Could that be down to the sheer size of the page? Or what could be doing it? (untested on a PC).
    Here’s the post in question

  77. Your issue is most likely due to the comments table. Try optimizing your SQL tables. I wasn’t even able to load the page. That’s a massive discussion that should be reserved for a forum. Maybe check out bbPress.

  78. Hey Derek, excellent theme! I wondering how you got the “possibly related” section done, i’m afraid CSS isn’t a strong suit of mine :P I assume it’s similar to .content_right_sub, correct?

  79. Leech, go ahead and check the source for my site. View the HTML and then the corresponding stylesheet and you should be able to pick out the bits you need.

  80. Hi Derek,

    I really love this theme and have been trying to use it on my website. Like JJ above, I found that the Comments systems becomes broken when the Sidebar Widgets plugin is activated. Comments no longer appear under the proper post, and all comments end up being associated with the very first post. As soon as I turn off the Sidebar Widget plugin, comment behavior works as advertised. Have you had a chance to look any more into this? Would appreciate a fix or some insight as to what is happening!

  81. Michel

    Hello Derek!

    Thanks a lot for this wonderful theme!

    Like Paul (and others) I am experiencing problems with the comment section of my site in combination with the side bar widgets. Would there be a way to fix this?

  82. The issue probably arises due to the fact that the theme uses a home.php template for the front rather than an index.php. Maybe if someone wants to try moving edits on home.php to index.php, and then creating an archives.php to mimic the back end, that may solve the problem?

  83. great theme dude :)

  84. Michel

    Dear Derek and others,

    In my previous comment I indicated that I am having problems with the comment section of my site in combination with the side bar widgets. Other people indicated that they are having this problem as well. Well, before I continue I must point out that I am a novice to PHP / SQL, so I learn by trial an error. I thought, though, that it would be a shame not to share some observations. What I did:

    I disabled the widgets plugin first. The comments were back. Then I edited the main_right.php and added the following code under the “PHP if … sidebar” line:

    <ul>
    <h3>Recent posts</h3>
    <div id="archived_posts">
    <?php query_posts('showposts=5'); ?>
    <?php while(have_posts()) : the_post(); if(!($second_post == $post->ID)) : ?>
    <li><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" title="<?php the_title(); ?>"><?php the_title() ?></a></li>
    <div class="clear"></div>
    <?php endif; endwhile; ?>
    </div>
    </ul>

    The 5 most recent posts appeared on the right, looking exactly as they did with the widgets turned on. The comments disappeared again. By the way, I need to change if(!($first_post == $post->ID)) to if(!($second_post == $post->ID)) in order to get the last 5 posts listed there. Anyway, the problem is still there.

    Then, I restored the original settings and I started editing the bottom_right.php file. I put the same code directly under these lines:

    <div class="archived_right">
    <div class="archived_sub_right">

    This time the comments did not disappear… and they are displayed like they should. So I figure that our problem must somehow be related to the main_right.php file. Does this make sense?

    Hello,

    More to add: it seems that the Wordpress widgets are working just fine with the comments (under posts and pages), except when the “recent posts” are selected in the upper part (side bar 1). This problem does not occur when the “recent posts” are put in side bar 2, Like I concluded in my previous comment, there must be some kind of problem with main_right.php, recent posts and the displaying of the content of comments in the lower part. By the way, the inclusion of the recent posts in side bar 1 only affects the comments, and not the the post summaries in the lower part of home.php and index.php.

  86. I cant change the bottom posts.
    Editing bottom_posts.php or home.php doesnt change anything at all.
    Any suggestions?

  87. I have been having the same problem with comments as everyone else, whereby if the Recent Posts” widget is activated, the comments for the post you are viewing are replaced by the comments in the *LAST POST* in the recent comments list.

    It appears the ID of the currently viewed post (stored in the_ID) is being overwritten by the ‘recent posts’ widget for each entry it displays. This means that by the time the comments() function is called, the post ID it looks at is no longer the post you are viewing.

    In my opinion it is WordPress at fault here, as they should not be allowing *any* widget to overwrite variables required by other elements of the page. However, it is what it is right now, which leaves us with the problem many are seeing.

    There are two solutions I can think of:

    1: Alter the base WordPress code. This is not ideal, as you would need to do this for each upgrade/update to wordpress.

    2: Modify the theme to put the right hand panel HTML below the comments html, then reposition the RHS using CSS..

    This latter option seems like the way to go forward, I just need to get my head round it.

    I’ll post if I have any success!

    Hope it helps all the frustrated folk out there, and at finally identifies the cause/effect of the issue.

    I too have a problem when using the ‘recent posts’ in sidebar 1. I have them in 2 now but would much prefer them in 1 - so if anyone knows of a simple solution (I’m no programmer) I would really appreciate it!! Cheers, Sarah

    Until then I think my simplistic solution is to put my own RSS feed into the RSS 1, in sidebar 1 :)

  90. QuickHack to resolve the Recent Posts/Comments issue:

    Its not ideal, as its dependent on javascript, but its working for me for now.

    File: single.php (or “Single Post” in the Theme Editor)

    Change: Directly under:

    <?php the_content('[...]‘); ?>

    add:

    <div id="comment-hack"><?php comments_template(); ?></div>

    Further down the page, where comments are output, change:

    <div class="bottom_left">
    <?php comments_template(); ?>
    </div>

    to

    <div class="bottom_left" id='comment-space'></div>

    File: header.php (’Header’ in the Theme Editor)

    Prototype.js users:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    // <![CDATA[
    function moveComments(){
    output = $('comment-hack').innerHTML;
    document.$('comment-space').innerHTML = output;
    }
    Event.observe(window, 'load', moveComments);
    // ]]>
    </script>

    Non Prototype.js users:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    // <![CDATA[
    function moveComments(){
    output = document.getElementByID('comment-hack').innerHTML;
    document.getElementByID('comment-space').innerHTML = output;
    }
    window.onload = moveComments();
    // ]]>
    </script>

    Finally, add the following style to your main stylesheet:

    #comment-hack {display:none;}

    That’s it. Recent posts now works.

    Not a pleasant hack, but it doesn’t require altering any of the WordPress code.

    I’ve contacted Automattic to see if there is a way to update their widget to not harm the current post ID, so will post if I get a response.

    Have fun all.

  91. Derek,

    If you approve my previous comment, feel free to tidy it up! the formatting went a little awry and may be hard for folks to follow!

    Ben

  92. Dear Derek;
    thank you very much for this great theme!
    Maybe you could help me with one problem.
    I use Wordpress 2.0.1
    If I activate your theme, there is always only one post to see in the main area. Have a look at http://www.diegosan.de
    The wordpress-menu is put on: show the last 20 entries.
    It would be great if you could help.
    Thanks very much.

  93. The theme was created to show only one post on the front page. Rather than using a index.php page you’ll notice the theme uses a home.php template. This overrides the settings under WordPress options

  94. I must say the template is great indeed.
    But it goes wrong on my site.It seems the comments can be left follow the right topic and always fix to the unique one.

    Pls have a look at my blog,and kindly help me to solve this bug.

    Tons of thank you.

  95. Even I install the latest version of WP,the same.
    Comment is run porperly when we swich to other theme.

    You can have look at http://yaya.luuk.com.cn

  96. Dear Derek;
    thank you very much for this great theme!

  97. Hi Ben,

    I followed you instructions, but now my comments area is completely blank. I need to fix this ASAP to get comments back.

    Can you take a look at my site and let me know what I did wrong? Is it the Javascript perhaps? I don’t use Prototype… hmm.

    Thanks for your help and the great theme!

  98. I tried multiple ways of using Ben’s posted method with no success. It seems everyone has this problem, therefore making widgets useless.

    Derek: Is there any chance you could update this theme so that it works, even with WP’s buggy widget implementation? There must be some workaround, but I have no idea what it is because I’m not a programmer.

    Any help would be appreciated

  99. I’ll take a look at the theme and widget problem when I find a little down time. From my understanding, widgets in general work. It’s just the recent comments that doesn’t work correct? I’m not able to test this right now as widgets are not something that I run right now.

  100. I found an easy work-around. Download alternative widgets!

    I am using:

    Fuzzy Recent Posts - http://www.semiologic.com/software/recent-posts/
    Simple Recent Comments (widget port) - http://mika.kfib.org/wordpress/2006/04/07/widget-for-simple-recent-comments/

    I found that the default “recent posts” widget also broke your theme, and not just the “recent comments” widget.

    Using alternative widgets seem to make everything good. At least on my blog :)

  101. Thanks for the advice Danny. The post update log received your recommendations. Seeing that other widgets work and not the official widgets makes me question whether the theme should be updated? Or, if the official widgets should be updated.

  102. Hey, I found this Wordpress theme on Digg. What caught my eye was that this theme is optimized for search engines. When I first started using the default Wordpress theme, I thought it was terrible and actually counter-productive to SEO methods. I just wanna say thanks for providing this. It gave me a lot of ideas when creating my own themes.
