Skateboards as a print medium

Happy - BoardPusher

Update: Follow-up - BoardPusher custom board arrives.

Anticipating an upcoming birthday, and realizing that the most memorable gifts are of the personalized type, I set out to find a service which would allow me to convert something created in Photoshop into a physical object. In this particular scenario, I discovered a custom skateboard design service known as BoardPusher.

For a small startup fee, skateboard artists can open up shop and sell their own unique designs to the public. Boardpusher’s will collect a small commission off of boards sold, and the rest is available for use as purchasing credit or profit. Check out the catalogue comprised of individual board artists or opt to create your own board. A few tips for anyone anticipating a quick board creation session:

  • Make use the available templates and opt for 600 dpi.
  • Mask off the edges of the board and keep in mind that the printing may bleed off the edges.
  • If you’re going to give the board to someone as a gift, don’t ruin the surprise. No this post didn’t ruin the surprise.

The service experience in itself was positive enough to retain my customer loyalty. I may very well come back and convert a few other designs into something worth hanging on the wall. Props to Jason Gaylor for the help.

  1. That’s a pretty unique idea. I’m always looking for more stuff to slap a pretty design on.

  2. Next on the list is finding some place that will let me design some chopsticks. The nice kind, not those break-it-yourself kind.

  3. Dude that is awesome, as a skateboarder that is very inspiring to me. I have done some local design for my shop but it was always so troublesome, with that site it looks like I can have a blast basting my goofy friends pictures on them :)

    Awesome find.

Well then I’ll just keep the ideas to myself rather than letting them accidently slip out.

  6. Whattup Derek,

You’ve got some bodacious content my friend. 5thirtyone.com has been interesting enough for a few visits. Thought I’d drop you some kudos.

I’ve already got a few friends heading this way. Drink more coffee and keep this ‘ish going.

    Cheers.

  7. Hi Derek, I’m going to start up my own line of skateboards in January would you be interested in helping me with designs? Thanks Mike

  8. Good luck to you Mike. Dropped you a note.
