Similar to the updated Grid Focus release, The Unstandard theme was dropped into TextMate for a little WordPress 2.7 feature support. The Unstandard and Grid Focus now both share the stripped down imageless base for designers or developers to build upon.
- Zero theme images. More opportunity for unique customizations.
- Nested comments for WordPress 2.7 with site admin author highlighting.
- Three widget zones – single post, index, and persistent footer elements.
- Remains backward compatible with WordPress 2.5 / 2.6 (legacy comments file).

Hello again Derek!
May I ask about how to activate the linked pages at the bottom of the photo blog posts? In the website I designed using your theme, MCCID College already have more than 19 blog posts. But I don’t know how to make the rest of the old posts appear as page links at the bottom.
Can you please help me? Thanks!
Jojo
Derek, you are a total mensch for making this theme available for free. I’m not the most amazingly technical person, but I’ve launched a personal site with the template and after some trial and error. Maybe I will write a “Unstandard for Dummies” FAQs for you one day. Anyway, thanks a mill.
Hi Derek,
I wonder is there a way of easily creating the images for the Lead and Secondary, like a script of some kind? I post a lot of content from the net (reblogs etc) and a script like that would help alot.
Adam,
I believe all of us are on the same dilemma. I have to crop every photo and make two of those for lead and secondary. When I made the photo as is, black spaces appear on the sides.
I also made some tweaks on the php settings in order for both photos will have ALT texts. I added two new custom fields for each (alt-text-lead and alt-text-secondary) and added the date above the comment box to show when the news was posted. I wish somebody can make a script to automate the photo editing.
I’ll put a tutorial together on how to use timthumb.php or the built in WordPress image cropper (when you upload a file in the post editor). There was a bit of a description on the demo site.
The downside of using timthumb.php is that your images need to reside on your own server in /images.
The downside to using either of these is that they are no retroactive – meaning your new "feature" starts working the day you implement it.
* Jojo Esposa.
Could you please share with me how you added alt tags to the lead and secondary images? Thank you.

this is a great theme. I wish this one was used as a new theme instead of the Grid Focus one for Wordpress.

Hi,
So this is driving me mad, and I feel like I’m overlooking something crucial. On this site:
http://www.bananagrabbers.com/testspecimens/
(which just has some dummy posts for now) I want to alter the sidebar size when you click through to a post, as I’ll be using it as a photoblog. So while on the main page the right sidebar is 340px, I have set it up to be 200px on the post page. Unfortunately, the Prev/Next buttons are sitting to the left of the 340px block, even though they are 200px in size.
Again, I feel like I’m overlooking something pretty simple to set this up. Any help? I’d appreciate it.
Thanks for everything you do, Derek. My non-photoblog uses Grid Focus!
Best,
John
This is a awesome theme and I am having tons of fun using it! There is one issue I am having. The first post image is not changing, I have has more recent posts, but this one is not going away — any thoughts ? Linendoll.com
Your query loop is probably in correct. Looks like you duplicated what was there to pull another recent post?
cool! thanks I will check it out — I was doing a lot of tinkering
I re-installed from a newly downloaded zip file and still I am getting 2 lead images
is there a setting in WP I am missing?
You re-downloaded The Unstandard theme? There is no reason why a clean download of the theme would render two lead images (just checked the source). There are no theme specific settings. Posts are rendered in reverse chronological order without any need to specify which posts to include where.
Figured it out — there is a “sticky” check box in WP2.7, which keeps a post on the front page. So this was an UE (user error) issue and nothing to do with the template. But really good to know what the sticky check box does!
thanks
Hi Derek
Thanks for this wonderful and clean theme. My problem is that i can’t get pictures to the frontpage. I guess you should add a custom field to add the picture, but it doesn’t work for me. How should I do?
Would be so grateful for this help.
Best Regards
The directions for using the theme are on the download page. Please read the entire post.
hi Derek , hi all
very good theme, I love to find out how many tweaking it can render,
blogging talking I can’t get the text ‘around’ the pics, any tips on that?
thanks .
Hi,
Compliments on your work 1st of all! But here’s my question:
Maybe i’m in the wrong place or i’m just overlooking something. I’m trying to change/edit the “About” page without succes. Wordpress 2.7 is installed by the way. I went to Pages and edited the About page. Changed the title and the content. I saved the changes but the menu in the header hasn’t changed. I already Googled the answer and searched several Wordpress forums and thought to give it a shot here. Please note that i am a beginner at this Wordpress…
In waiting of your reply.
The link to your about page is a #. You need to open header.php and add the URL to your about page.
Wow that was easy! Thanks a bunch from a Wordpress dummy. Keep up the good work.
Blessings.
Hi Derek, first of all, congratulations for your job!
I have the same problem of the last post. I can’t edit the about page because is missing. I’m not more experience with php and I don’t know how can I put inside of this page the code, in order to follow your design.
Please, Could you give me some instructions?
Thanks a lot!
The about page is not missing. You need to create it, then paste the URL to the page into the navigation elements. Open WordPress settings > Pages > Edit. You’ll probably see an existing About page to edit and expand on, or create something new and find the URL for it.
Thanks Derek! Do it!
Hi Derek again,
How Can I put a particular widget inside a particular page? I put a Text widget in the index page and this widget appears in all of the detail pages.
Thanks!
Try the Widget Logic plugin. I haven’t tried it, but it seems like the easiest way to do what you’re trying to do without diving into modifying the template.
Hi Derek,
here again with a special request,
I run a Mag blog, And I do need a ‘thing’, a custom field or else
that will allow me to show-up in the home/index page the articles Title (as already is)
the articles relevant picture (as already is) Plus the Article signature(the writer’s) ?
I do know I can write very long titles with backspace just to have 2 lines of title
with the above or below one devoted to signature, but it’s very unaesthetic
would you be available to “write” a custom field or else
that will allow me to show-up that ‘plus’?
Also , I’ve deleted the ‘comment/s n°’ in any article
event because comments now get theyr way to a forum,
so that can be an ‘empty and usable’ field.
And I’m not asking more free stuff, so to speak
Thanks for your work,
eager to get some news from you .
what is the exact procedure one should go through to make a post which includes the two images? are you uploading both images via the wordpress interface and then copying and pasting the URL’s into the 2 different custom fields?
that would seem odd since you don’t actually see the url’s unless you “insert into post”.
am i missing something? seems like there should be a more efficient way to post.
The directions are outlined at the bottom of the download page. The process is not difficult. You can copy the URI for an updated image from the WordPress image uploader without having to insert the image into the post.
Weirdest thing happened. All of a sudden the right sidebar has been pushed away and down from the single post view. I haven’t modified the theme except for colors. All was well and just today I look and UGH!
Any suggestions how to fix?
Thanks in advance.

You found a bug with comments requiring that a user be logged in to comment. I’m aware of it now and will fix, update the download, an reply here.
The fix is in. Feel free to download the theme again and grab just the comments.php file. The issue was an improperly closed if statement.
Awesome. Thanks so much.
Thanks.
Looking forward to it.
Love the theme.
Hi Derek,
This theme is great but I have tried both the old and versions but get the same issue. IF I search for something the results only show two posts, not 8. Do you know what could cause this?
Thanks
Paul
Under Settings > Reading what is the number for &qout;Blog pages show at most".
It was 2… Now it’s 8…. That solved it… Thanks.
Hi Derek,
Love the Unstardard theme. I am doing some customization and was wondering how to get the “Leave a Reply” area on a Page – just as it is on a Post.
