As of 12AM, I have officially begun my 2006 Spring CSS Reboot redesign. A face-lift for 5ThirtyOne so to speak. I really do have OCDD [Obsessive Compulsive Design Disorder].

The CSS Reboot is a community event for web professionals. May 1st, 2006 at 6:00 GMT Rebooters from all over the world will launch their web standards-based redesigns simultaneously, bringing traffic, interest and a little respect to their sites. There are no prizes or arbitrary winners, just great exposure and the knowledge that we all participated in something great. [...]

This will probably be a behind the scenes redesign until I get closer to completion, which in time means that I will be looking for additional feedback from readers. I’m trying something new this time around. Rather than coding whimsically on the fly, I’m going to try a more structure process. Generally, the process went something along the lines of:

  • Make a mental image of the “completed” result.
  • Open clean document in Notepad++. Begin coding from the top down.
  • Refresh the page in Firefox, IE, and Opera [with the occasional screen capture from Safari].
  • Rinse and repeat until the end result looks something similar to the mental aforementioned mental image.

Things are definitely a little different this time around. I’ve started with a wire frame mockup [which I have never used] from which I plan to calculate dimensions before opening any text editor to begin the actual markup. Slow and steady. 33 odd days until synchronized re-launch. I’m trying to get most of the structure done this week before school starts up again.

  1. Where did you get your wireframe template?

  2. Shocking! -ro1igm61

  3. Where did you get your wireframe template?

i’m not to sure i understand. who needs templates? from my understanding, wireframes are the underlying structure of a website. the pre-coding step which outlines the different paths a reader can take through your pages. mine is nothing more then chicken scratch with pen and paper.

i know there are a few templates floating around the net for visio but seeing as though i am meager college student, free sounds better.

  4. Man I wish I could do stuff like that. I have trouble deciding what I want.. so I throw together something REALLY simple in Photoshop, and end up with something completely differnt.

  5. Cool derek, can’t wait. I posted a post on my site a couple months ago asking how people went about starting a design (no one responed lol). I know some people start with a photoshop image of what the site will look like and chop it up, but I could never seem to get anything done that way. Your way sounds like something I should try. Now I usually just jump right in with a general layout in my head, and hope for the best.

  6. well we’ll see how well i can convert a paper and pen mockup / sketch / doodle into something on screen. ;)

That’s sorta what I do. I photoshop something up and then using as little images as possible (only for the needed stuff; like icons or some rounded corners) convert it into HTML and CSS
