iPhoneModem: 3G tether for the iPhone The official AT&T tethering service for the iPhone 3G is rumored to be an additional $30 / mo - release for some time in the future. For iPhone owners with a Jailbroken phone, this $10 app via Cydia will get you tethered. Tested and working flawlessly. The Mac / Windows desktop app included with the purchase automatically creates an Adhoc network between your laptop and phone for transferring data. Probably breaks some rules. Sample speed test result.

Have been using the app since 1.0. It works flawlessly and even tells you how much data you’ve used and the speed you’re getting.

Nice. I found the app yesterday after I decided to go the Jailbreak route again. The desktop client should really stress the importance and advantage of setting up a network password immediately when the app is launched though. Saves from other people snooping for free internet access.

  3. You might want to check out PDANet (also on Cydia). Its a bit faster, more stable, better at conserving power & has the added benefit of handling all network traffic properly, i.e., you don’t have to use something like Proxifier. As well, its been the defacto standard tethering app on other devices for years so the company has a long history of knowing what they’re doing when it comes to tethering.

  4. Derek says:

The only turn off concerning PDANet is the price. If iPhoneModem turns out to be a dud, I’ll look at PDANet. So far tethered browsing throughout the day has been going smoothly.
