Media Temple

Something fresh

There is no denying it has been a little quiet around these parts. I decided to brush the dust off the site with a new look. Something I had been chipping away on for the past few weeks whenever I managed to find a little down time. It’s a change from the previous image driven Unstandard that was released quite some time ago.

So what’s going on with 5thirtyone.com?

  • Quite busy with work at Cirqe (the reason for recent lack of activity).
  • Migrated the site – Media Temple DV 3.0 to the DV 3.5 server.
  • Moved back to Mint for site stats.
  • Experimented with Amazon S3 as an external image host. Quickly dropped because of latency issues. Integrated as an automated backup target for my personal computer though.
  • Took a break from Google Adsense. More on why later.
  • New look uploaded today. Thanks to Brand Spankin New for the mini icons & Blueprint CSS for the PSD grid.

The site is still missing some core features. Specifically "search". I’m experimenting with a few different options, one being Lijit. Anyone have feedback? Plenty more to update but being 2:00 AM, it’s time to call it a night.

btw. I also prefer mint because of the uncomplicated presentation of data, but I also got an Analytics code on my blog – to compare.

Subtraction sets the standard. I checked out all of your links Nick. Love all the different sites that you’ve setup for each of your projects.

For a few seconds, I thought I accidentally loaded up Subtraction, and was wondering where Khoi Vinh’s black lab was at the top, then I realized that 5thirtyone has a new look. I like it!

Just cut to the chase guys and accuse him of copyright theft….that’s what your leaning towards right? If not maybe give teh guy abreak- personally this theme works better than subtraction- lets be honest.

    Hi!

I have liked all your previous site designs, but not too into this one. I think it is the minimalist color palette.

While I think bold/black definitely pops as a link choice, it s very contrasty and glaring on the eyes. Maybe I am just old?

Something else from a user perspective is your categories int he footer. The number of articles in parenthesis become lost when reading across to 2nd, 3rd columns as to which category name they belong. For instance Apple (31). The (31) looks like it belongs to Automobiles due to the close proximity, narrow gutter.

Love your content and writing, but not a fan of this iteration’s color palette.

The minimal rhythm is so smooth, and the layout is very neat. Like it.

A beautiful, minimal, grid based design. I must join the chorus of those asking if this can be released as a theme… although I can understand how you might want to keep it to yourself!
